Get Started With The Analytics Enclave

This document outlines the requirements and step-by-step setup instructions for connecting to the Windows 10 Enclave Virtual Desktop using the VMware Horizon Client or via the supported browsers.

Introduction

The VMware Horizon is a centralized desktop virtualization solution that delivers virtualized desktop services and applications to end-users from centralized servers.

  • The VMWare Horizon Client offers better performance and features than the VMWare Horizon View HTML Access.
  • Use the HTML Access to move files or documents from your endpoint device (desktop or laptop computer, tablet, android phone) to the Analytics Enclave environment.

Prerequisites

  • Access to the MGB Analytics Enclave, "Enclave", is granted upon completion and submission of the Access Request form and verification by the Digital Research Cloud Data Solutions team. To request access to this resource, please complete the Research Access Request form.
  • Ensure that you have the Mass General Brigham (MGB) credentials (username and password) before trying to connect to the Enclave.
  • Ensure that your internet connection is persistent and reliable.
  • Ensure that you have established a MGB VPN connection. | KB0023967
  • Ensure that you have sufficient disk space to install the VMware Horizon VDI software (for example: The file size of the 2013 version of VMware Horizon Client for macOS is 54.65 MB and 238.57 MB for Windows).

Supported Web Browsers

For best experience with the VMware Horizon software, use the following browsers:

  • Chrome (latest versions)
  • Firefox (latest versions)
  • Safari (latest versions)
  • Microsoft Edge (Windows 10)

It is also recommended that you allow automatic updates to the browser when a new version of the browser is available. This ensures that your device (desktop or laptop computer or tablet) is protected with the latest security update. Here's an example of Google Chrome Updates.

If the browser is not the up to date, you may receive the following warning:

Install the VMWare Horizon Client

  • Prior to installing the VMWare Horizon Client, save your work as you will be asked to reboot your device.
  • You require administrator's privileges to install the VMware Horizon Client on your endpoint device. As a security provision, there may be restrictions on the changes you can make on your computer.
  • Already installed the VMWare Horizon Client? Continue to the next section to connect to the Enclave with the client.
  1. Using Google Chrome or supported browser, go to https://my.analyticsenclave.org/ to download the VMWare Horizon Client.
  2. Click Install VMware Horizon Client

  1. Under Product Downloads, find the applicable selection for your device.
  2. Click the “Go to Downloads” link to the right of the section for your endpoint device.

  1. Once downloaded, open/execute the file to start the installation. Follow the installation prompts to completion (select all default settings).
  2. Once your device/computer is back up, locate and open the recently downloaded VMWare Horizon Client.

Connect to the Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI)

These steps assume you already have the VMware Horizon Client software installed on your endpoint device.

  1. Launch VMware Horizon Client from your endpoint device.
  2. Make a connection to the server and login:

    • First Time User: If this is your first time connecting to the Enclave Virtual Desktop, add the corresponding connection server as follows:

      1. Click Add Server or plus (+) sign to add a new server
      2. In the Connection Server field, enter my.analyticsenclave.org
      3. Click Connect

    • Returning User: If you have logged on "my.analytics.enclave.org" server before, you will get right to the login dialogue box.

  1. Enter your MGB username and password and click on Login

  1. Upon successful completion of the step above, you will see icon(s) labeled with the short-version of your project name. One icon per project. When you hover the cursor over the icon you see the full label if the project name is lengthy.

  1. Click on the specific project icon to launch the corresponding VDI on your laptop, PC, or tablet. It may take about 15 seconds to connect.
  2. Your connection is successful when you land on the desktop as shown below.

    • Remember to Sign Out of the desktop upon completion of your routine work.
    • Whenever you need to reboot your virtual machine, click in the Restart icon. Remember to save your work before restarting your desktop because any unsaved work will be lost when the desktop is restarted.
  1. Once you have successfully accessed your workspace in Enclave 2.0 via the my.analyticsenclave.org server and migrated the files you want to continue working with, you can delete the 'beta.analyticsenclave.com' server as shown below.

Using the Browser to Launch HTML Access

  1. Using Google Chrome or supported browser, go to https://my.analyticsenclave.org/ and select VMware Horizon HTML Access or go directly to https://my.analyticsenclave.org/portal/webclient/index.html#/. For best experience, use the recommended and supported browsers.

  1. Enter your MGB username and password

  1. Click on Login

  1. Upon successful completion of the steps above, you will see icon(s) labeled with the short-version of your project name.

  • Whenever you need to restart your virtual machine, click on the Restart icon. Remember to save your work before restarting your desktop because any unsaved work will be lost when the desktop is restarted.
