Course Description
The Scientific Computing team is offering an introductory course to familiarize researchers with the ERISOne Linux Cluster. This is an opportunity for new users to familiarize with the basic Linux environment; we are no longer offering a separate Linux course, but will incorporate concepts for beginners in this updated training. Please note this is now three hours in length.
The class will emphasize common strategies and best practices in utilizing Computational Resources and high-capacity storage systems provided by ERIS. This class will also include a hands-on session to provide the audience with an opportunity to log onto the system, check out its software stack and use the scheduler for job submission, etc.

- Command Line: Basic operations, view and modify text files
- Graphical Interface: Linux on ERISOne the Remote Linux Desktop and Graphical applications
- More complex commands and wildcards
- How to find documentation, the man pages
- Connect and transfer files: ssh, scp
- Groups and Permissions: The ROOT user, startup files, environment variables, file ownership
- Cluster configuration: nodes and remote desktops
- Interactive Command-Line Sessions on Compute Nodes
- Understanding Jobs CPU and memory resources
- Queues for job scheduling and resource reservation
- Submitting jobs to the Cluster
- Software request and installation
Requirements
- Bring a laptop, either Windows or Mac
- Request an ERISOne account in advance. Please fill the form ERISOne Account Request Form
- If you have a Windows laptop, please also install putty.
- To connect to the Partners Network WiFi in the Assembly Row training room, your laptop must have "SecureConnector" installed. Learn more
Recommendation
This course is designed for individuals with little knowledge of Linux and those who want to improve their basic knowledge and familiarize with the ERISOne environment. If you are completely new to Linux, we encourage you to check out free Linux Foundation Online Courses.
