Course Description
The Scientific Computing team is offering an Introduction to Linux course to familiarize researchers with our working environment. Many of the services we provide for investigators take advantage of the powerful capabilities of the Linux OS. This is an opportunity for new users to familiarize with the basic Linux environment and learn how to work on the ERISOne Linux Cluster. This class will provide a hands-on session.

Topics

  • Why Linux: Linux Philosophy.
  • Graphical Interface: Linux on ERISOne the Remote Linux Desktop and Graphical applications.
  • Command Line: Basic operations, view and modify text files, more complex commands and wildcards.
  • How to find documentation.
  • Filesystem: Storing and organizing, compressing files
  • Groups and Permissions: The ROOT user, startup files, environment variables, file ownership.
  • Text editors: Manipulate files with command line commands, graphical text editors.
  • Connect and transfer files: ssh, scp.

This course is designed for individuals with no knowledge on Linux or those who want to improve their basic knowledge and familiarize with the ERISOne environment.

Requirements

  1. Bring a laptop, either Windows or Mac.

  3. Install the NoMachine Enterprise Client. Please find Instructions in the KnowledgeBase.
