What is R and why should I learn it?

R is a programming language originally designed for statistics. But as it grows and matures, modern R is utilized more for data process/ manipulation/ analyses/ visualization. Especially with health care data (not only bioinformatics data, but also clinical informatics data), R is gaining ground every day.

Target trainee for this class

You are a data analyst or a data manager/administrator. Most of your work is done manually by excel and you hope to improve this by some kind of programming.

Goal of this class

The focus of this course will be on data importing, manipulating, transforming, combining and summarizing data. After this 2-day training, you can read excel files in R, carry out basic data manipulation in R, and visualize data in an exploratory approach.

  • R Introduction / Background / History
  • Rstudio
  • Similarities between R and Excel

If you have taken any R courses from college/graduate school or if you know how to program, this class is not for you. In this case, please register for "R intro training” (see the Events Calendar for upcoming offerings).
