A virtual private network (VPN) provides an encrypted connection over the Internet from a device to a network. The encrypted connection is known as a 'VPN tunnel'.
When you connect remotely to the MGB network by VPN, all the network traffic and communication will be passed through a secure tunnel. Using VPN helps keep company data more secure and prevents unauthorized people from eavesdropping on the network traffic.
Is VPN required?
The 'Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client' provides highly secure access to the Mass General Brigham enterprise network. Remote and hybrid employees use VPN to access internal resources, network drives, and software.
Not all resources require a VPN connection. Much of our remote work can be done with a computer, an Internet connection, and a web browser.
Before establishing a VPN connection, explore whether you can access your software and IS resources through Workspace. Or, reference KB0026897 and check if an application is under the 'VPN Required' column.
Setting up VPN
Instructions to install and/or launch VPN will vary by the computer and operating system version. Follow the knowledge article linked below for your device.
When you connect to VPN, you will need to confirm your mobile phone registration. This phone will receive a code each time you initiate a VPN connection to confirm your identity.
To confirm your phone registration, go to https://myprofile.mgb.org and click 'Login'. Sign in with your MGB username and password and choose 'Update my Phone Verification' to view and update your phone numbers.
