64-bit Operating System FAQs

What do I need to know about 64-bit?
The terms 32-bit and 64-bit refer to the way a computer processes information. The 64-bit version of Windows handles large amounts of random access memory (RAM) more effectively than a 32-bit system.

What are the benefits of a computer with a 64-bit Operating System over a standard 32-bit?
A computer with a 64-bit Operating System provides increased performance, reliability, and processing speed for all computer functions and applications.  Advanced graphics design, sound and video editing, and high-powered calculations are just some of the reasons 64-bit systems are used. A 64-bit managed device is encrypted, receives patches and other features of a Mass General Brigham workstation.

What Mass General Brigham applications are not available on a 64-bit Operating System?
Many Mass General Brigham applications are not currently available for computers with a 64-bit Operating System. Applications will not show up in the Applications Menu until they are tested. Critical applications are prioritized and will show up in the Applications Menu once certified.

Can a 32-bit application run on a 64-bit Operating System?
Yes, if an application is coded correctly, it will see performance and reliability gains when used on a 64-bit operating system.

What is the Application Checker Tool?
Many Mass General Brigham applications are not currently available for computers with a 64-bit Operating System.  The Application Checker Tool checks an individual’s Applications to make sure they are available to use with a 64-bit Operating System.  The Application Checker Tool helps you select the right computer for each user.

How do I access the Application Checker Tool?
The Application Checker Tool is available under Applications > Utilities.  As an added convenience, a link to the Application Tool is available to department purchasers who use the Ergonomics Online Ordering system for purchasing computers. View Instructions

Who should order a computer with a 64-bit Operating System?
Finance and Research are departments that can benefit by the increased performance and processing speed of computer with a 64-bit Operating System.  All users should use the Application Checker Tool to determine eligibility.

How do I request an upgrade to 64-bit?
There are several requirements that must be met before a device can be upgraded.  Please review SN Article KB0024273 for complete information on the requirements and request process. 

How do I know if my computer is using 32-bit or 64-bit Operating System?
Right-click on My Computer, and select Properties.  The version is displayed next to System Type.
