HOWTO: Install and setup Evolution Email client for Linux to work with Office 365

Purpose:

  • Instructions how to install and setup the Evolution email client on Linux workstation to work with Office 365/Exchange Online

Requirements:

  • Evolution 3.22 or newer and the evolution-ews plugin version 3.22 or newer.
  • OS: Linux - CentOS 7, Redhat 7 or Ubuntu 17 to newer
  • Desktop GUI GNOME
  • Your email account must be located on Exchange Online/Office 365
  • Only EWS is supported, IMAP will NOT work with Office 365
  • Important: Use of Evolution is not supported and therefore the Mass General Brigham Service Desk will not be able to provide any type of troubleshooting. Use these instructions as a general overview for connecting your Mass General Brigham Office 365 account.

Instructions:

  1. Examples for Ubuntu
  2. If you have not already done so, install the evolution and evolution-ews package using your favorite package manager. This document assumes evolution-ews version 3.26 or later.
    • Open a terminal and type commands below (one line at a time)
    • sudo apt-get remove evolution
    • sudo apt-get update
    • sudo apt-get install evolution
    • sudo apt-get install evolution-ews
  3. Examples for CentOS 7 and RedHat 7
    • Open a terminal and type commands below (one line at a time)
    • sudo yum update
    • sudo yum install evolution
    • sudo yum install evolution-ews
  4. Launch or open the Evolution application
  5. If this is a new installation you will be prompted to enter your email information, otherwise to add a new account by going to Edit | Preferences and choose Add from the Mail Accounts menu.
  6. Click Next
  7. Enter your name as you'd like it to appear and your primary email address "name@partners.org" or "name@mgh.harvard.edu" or name@bwh.harvard.edu" for Email Address, then click Next
  8. Click the Skip button
  9. On the resulting window, enter the following information for each field:
  10. Click Fetch URL
  11. You will be prompted for your password. Enter your password.
  12. Host URL and OAB URL should be successfully discovered. Click Next
  13. Click Next to accept Receiving Options
  14. Enter any name for the account name, and click Next
  15. Click Apply
  16. If prompted, enter your Partners password once more and click OK
  17. Setup is complete. Email and calendar data will take some time to sync.
