Harvard Medical School: "Harvard Catalyst Profiles is a social networking website for scientists, which was created in 2008 to help investigators find new collaborators. Since then, the website has been used for numerous applications, such as matching students with mentors, forming review committees in novel ways, understanding Harvard's research portfolio, and studying diversity in the workforce. This talk will describe current features in Profiles, extracting data from the website, and new functionality under development." -

Raúl San José Estépar, Ph.D, Assistant Professor of Radiology at Harvard Medical School and a Research Associate at Brigham and Women's Hospital will present the efforts carried out at the Applied Chest Imaging Laboratory (ACIL) and the Laboratory of Mathematics in Imaging (LMI) for the development of new image-based biomarkers for Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). He will review the main image processing approaches, machine learning techniques and the computational infrastructure that are allowing them to process 40,000 CT scans corresponding to 10,000 subjects as part of the COPDGene study for the discovery of the genetic determinants for COPD susceptibility that may provide insight into clinically relevant COPD subtypes

Keith Morrison, DFCI Research Computing Programmer will give a high-level overview of Ruby and Rails, and talk about some of the benefits and drawbacks to using them for web application development. He will also talk about DFCI's development methodology (including test-driven development and behavior-driven development) and their toolkit and will discuss some of the problems they've solved withthese technologies.

John Schwartz, Partners I.T. Audit Manager and Marcia Wong, Partners Senior I.T. Internal Auditor will discuss compliance. PHS Internal Audit Services (IAS) is an independent group within Partners that functionally reports to the PHS CEO and PHS Board of Directors Audit and Compliance Committee. PHS IAS performs IS/T risk assessments by looking at the IS environment and taking into account the impact and likelihood an adverse event could occur. We recently completed a General Computers Control (GCC) review of the Partners Research Computing IS environment and have identified some risks and best practices that could be implemented to enhance the group's overall IS security posture and help mitigate some IS related risks.
