HOWTO: Install Crashplan Backup Client on Linux

Purpose:

  • Installation instructions Crashplan application

Requirements:

  • Platform: Linux
  • OS Requirements: Kernel version 2.6.13 or newer, glibc 2.4+, cpio, Xorg (GUI required) & SWT
  • Software: Crashplan
  • Required Software: Java 

Installation:

    1. First download the correct Crashplan client from https://rcservices.partners.org  Login with your Partners Username and Password
    2. Click on My Subscriptions located on the left side of the screen

  1. Then click on correct Client link to download Crashplan Client installer
  2. Open the file, and extract the installation folder to the desktop. 
  3. From a Terminal window enter the following commands (note all commands are case sensitive): 
  4. type: cd Desktop 
  5. Press Enter
  6. type: cd CrashPlanPRO-install 
  7. Press Enter
  8. type: sudo ./install.sh
  9. Press Enter
  10. You will be prompted for the root password. 
  11. After entering it, press enter again to begin the installer. Continue pressing enter to read through the lengthy terms and conditions for the application. 
  12. In order for CrashPlan to run properly, please perform the steps advised when the following prompt appears (CrashPlan requires Java to run. If you wish to install JRE for CrashPlan to run)
  13. When you get to the end, type "yes" and press return to accept them. Continue the installation by pressing enter to accept the default settings for the installation. At the end of the install press enter to launch the CrashPlan client. 
  14. Before continuing we will have to ensure that port 4282 is open. From the same Terminal window enter the following command (again, case sensitive): 
  15. type: sudo iptables -A INPUT -p udp --dport 4282 -j ACCEPT 
  16. After the application has been installed, you will prompted to login
  17. If this is the first time installing the Crashplan applicaton click on New Account and enter your information.  If you already have an account or received an email from rcc@partners.org with a username and password click on the Existing Account and use the account information you were sent.
  18. If you need to launch the Crashplan application later it is located in  /usr/local/bin/CrashPlanDesktop
