HOWTO: Change Your Password on macOS


  • macOS  10.13 or greater. If your Mac is running an OS older than 10.13 you are out of support, at risk and out of compliance with Partners policy. Please contact the Service Desk for assistance with an upgrade.


HOW TO: Change Your Password on macOS

If you know your password and can use it to log in to your account, you can change your password in System Preferences > Users & Groups.

If your Mac is a corporate purchased Apple laptop or desktop, the default password is the unique asset tag found on the bottom or back of your device (case sensitive, and any "0" is a zero).



  1. Launch System Preferences from the Apple menu, then click Users & Groups.

  2. Select your user name from the list of users and click the Change Password button.
