Enterprise Research IS (ERIS supports the Research technology and needs of Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH), Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH) and Technology Innovators across the System. You will be a key member of the team and will have a broad range of responsibilities including: effective server installation/configuration, operation, and automation. Maintenance of physical, virtual, and HPC cluster hardware and OS’s plus related infrastructure including networking. You will participate in technical research and support to enable continued innovation within the infrastructure. You will specifically be responsible for ensuring system hardware, operating systems, networking and related procedures, adhere to organizational standards, continued automation deployment, follow security guidelines, and provide members of the Mass General Brigham research community and collaborators with appropriate resources needed for research. You will be a key point of contact for specific Centers. Systems supported include Linux and Windows physical and cloud-based servers, HPC clusters and storage systems, with a concentration on virtualization technologies such as VMware.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities 

  • Server Administration: Manage and administer production servers used by researchers and Research Centers. This includes deployment, monitoring system performance, networking, patching, data storage and backup/restore needs, maintainability, and availability.  
  • Responsible for tier 1 monitoring of servers/systems and Tier 2 technical support for break/fix, setup/installation support, patching and escalation support, and solutions support.
  • This will include working with various hardware and software vendors through support agreements or with open-source community as well as ERIS service owners.
  • Responsible for the inventory and tracking of computer related equipment. 
  • Develop and maintain system documentation using wiki and knowledge management tools.
  • Create and close work orders for tasks using established standards
  • Perform other duties as required by the situation and circumstances 
  • Occasionally lift and carry supplies and equipment weighing up to 25 pounds and possible significant fieldwork around the BWH / MGH campuses and satellite buildings.
  • Off-hours on-call support is required.


  • BA/BS degree required or equivalent combination of skills/experience.
  • 4+ years of experience required in technical support within a large, networked computing environment, extensively with Linux and VMware.

Skills/Abilities/Competencies Required

  • Must be capable of contributing within a team, exhibit a high level of initiative, and have an eagerness to learn new technologies.
  • Demonstrated ability in providing systems administration, server troubleshooting to a community with diverse computing needs.
  • Candidate must possess knowledge and understanding of Linux and Windows server configurations including networking and support of RHEL, and CentOS infrastructure.
  • Experience with the automated deployment tools like Puppet, Ansible, and Git for rapid provisioning and maintenance of resources.
  • Experience with administration, support, and maintenance of VMware, vSphere, Vcenter and ESXI servers
  • Experience with Apache, SSL and certificate generation.
  • Knowledge and understanding of security and monitoring software packages including but not limited to O/S, network, application, and intrusion detection tools.
  • Experience in a higher education or agile, rapid support environment desirable
  • Ability to multitask and prioritize work requirements
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with a demonstration of a professional demeanor

Working Conditions

MGB has implemented special remote working policies due to COVID-19. These policies are subject to change; however, it is currently expected that this position will work remotely (e.g. from home) full time through June 2021

Normal office environment with the ability to work from home and occasional travel to various campus buildings required.

Occasionally lift and carry supplies and equipment weighing up to 25 pounds
