All Partners and non-Partners laptop computers that connect to the Partners network must be encrypted through the installation of encryption software. ("Encryption" is the encoding of data into a format that is non-readable by outside parties, providing privacy to computer device.) All devices must be encrypted by December 31, 2009.

This action is very important. Federal and State Regulations, along with proper security practices, require Partners to enhance our overall security posture. These security enhancements are intended to protect both patients and employees. Over the next few months, you will receive more information regarding Partners-wide security policies, standards, and procedures.
Please see below for further information about how to encrypt your laptop. You can contact your Security Officer for additional information. The list of Security Officers and Frequently Asked Questions can be found on the Help Desk Encryption webpage at http://helpdesk.partners.org/encryption.htm.

MAC and Linux Users
A solution for MAC and Linux laptops will be made available and communicated in next few weeks. No action is required at this time.

Windows Laptop Users (IMMEDIATE ACTION REQUIRED)
Partners has selected SafeBoot® ™ software to encrypt all Microsoft Windows laptops that connect to the Partners network. Please follow the instructions below to properly encrypt your Windows laptop. This must be completed by December 31, 2009.

Step 1: Connect to the Network
Connect your laptop to the Partners network while onsite or via Cisco VPN.

Step 2: Back up your Data (recommended)
Before beginning the encryption process, we strongly recommend backing up your data. If you do not currently use a backup product, you may click the link below to backup your data to the Partners network: \\sfa18\nbscript$\PCT_Safeboot.hta <file:///\\sfa18\nbscript$\PCT_Safeboot.hta> The data will be saved for 7 days.

Step 3: Install SafeBoot® ™
To install SafeBoot® ™ encryption software, go to http://www.infosec.partners.org/lte <http://www.infosec.partners.org/lte> . Click the link that corresponds to your device and follow the installation prompts.

The encryption process will take approximately 2-5 hours to complete. You will be able to use your laptop normally during this period. You may also safely shutdown or place your laptop into standby mode. Once the encryption process is complete, you will be prompted for a SafeBoot logon when the laptop is powered on.

Thank you in advance for your cooperation in assuring Partners entities comply with State and Federal regulations and protect both our patients and employees.

If you have any questions, encounter any problems, or require additional information regarding this initiative, please visit the Help Desk web page http://helpdesk.partners.org/encryption.htm or contact your Security Officer.
